The new hall extension includes open spaces to incorporate the nature around it.

North Keppel Island Environmental Education Centre

North Keppel Island, QLD

Design and Architecture was engaged to assist the education centre on North Keppel Island with a hall extension. The school hall is on an island so the limitations and problems associated with being so isolated played a heavy role on the project therefore the design was prepared keeping the limitations in mind.

The scope for existing hall extension was to create an airy and open space that can be enclosed and opened to the natural environment around it. This was achieved by incorporating large, open sliding doors, levers and raked ceilings. The existing patio was extended to create a formal seating area, which included widened steps that also acted as tiered seating (this created a secondary informal stage). The extension was completed in a way to blend in with the existing hall, and to appear as one building instead of two.
