Modern urban fitout for Dingles, a Rockhampton cafe & restaurant providing fine Australian cuisine.

Dingles Cafe & Bar

Rockhampton, QLD

The owners had a very clear purpose with their design brief to create a unique and conversational space for the people of the Rockhampton region. The brief was to honour the existing heritage features of the building while paying homage to their personal backgrounds to create a homely and casual dining experience.

Through maintaining existing the exposed brick walls, various archways and concrete and timber floors we created a textured and moody ambience. The buildings high ceilings were kept to add volume to the space.  The use of brass fittings and a brass bar was something totally unique for the cafe’s location, and while brass is easily marked and scratched, we encouraged the contrived patina of this beautiful finish to add to the overall homely appeal of the space.

The age of the building offered many constraints to overcome including the drainage and servicing being located at the front of the building, which was not practical for a café style purpose. The building also spanned across multiple levels and rather than working towards creating a level site, we chose to maintain the different levels to keep the building true to its heritage.
